Individual Note: Notes from 1840 Census: John was living in Schuykill Township, Chester County, PA. Living in the house were 1 male aged 20-30 (John), 2 females under age 5 (Elmyra and Martha) and 1 female aged 20-30 (Luzetta). No other information was provided.
Notes from 1850 census: John and his family were living in Phoenixville Borough, Chester County, PA. John's occupation was shown as a laborer. Children living with the family included Elmyra (aged 14), Martha (aged 11), Henretta (aged 6), Geo. Washington (aged 8) and Adam (shown on next page - aged 2). The value of John's real estate was listed as $4,000. All children except Adam were shown to have attended school the previous year.
Notes from 1860 Census: John and his family were living were living in Phoenixville Borough, Chester County, PA. John's occupation was shown as cartman. Living with the family was Martha (age 21), Washington (age 18), Henretta (age 15) and Rachel (age 12). Martha's occupation was listed as dress maker and Washington's occupation was listed as "hook up" (probably a stable hand or laborer in his father's hauling business). Washington and Henretta were listed as attending school. John's real estate was listed as valued at $2,500 and his personal property valued at $700.
Census in 1850 and 1860 show John's wife as Rosetta with a birthday consistant about 1814 to 1815 with children consistant in both census. In the 1870 census John's wife is shown as Luzetta with a birthday of approximately 1812-1813. Children shown (John W., aged 6, and Oliver, aged 1) are named either Prichard or Richards (see note below on John Hipple's will). Per email note from Ginny --- wife was actually Luzetta Savage meaning that use of Rosetta is probably due to census taker error or poor penmanship.
Notes from 1870 Census: John and his family were living in Phoenixville Burough, Chester County, PA. Children living with John and Luzetta were their grandchilhren John W. Richards (age 6) and Oliver Richards (age 1). John was attending school. John's occupation was listed as a carter. His real estate was valued at $3,000 and his personal property at $500.
Notes from 1880 Census: John and Luzetta were living on Morgan St. in the South Ward of Phoenixville Burough, PA. Living with them was their grandson John W. Richards, aged 16. John Hipple's occupation was listed as Carting and John Richard's occupation was listed as a Prentice to Moulding.
Notes from John's obiturary printed in the Daily Local News published 5/3/1886: John died of complications from injuries suffered about a year prior to his death when a ladder and other items fell on him. Many prominent citizens of Phoenixville attended his funeral.
Children listed are from census in 1850 and/or 1860. Ginny only showed George Washington as child of John and Luzetta. John's will probated May 15, 1886 and finalized May 7, 1895 only showed Washington (George W.), Adam, Elmira (High), and Martha (Harley) as heirs. The will also provides that "If the executors shall deem it necessary or expedient to sell my Lot of Land and Stable thereon, fronting on Walnut Street in the afore said Burough, they may do so, and are also hereby given full power and authority to convey said premises to the purchaser or purchasers thereof, out of which there shall be retained by my executors a sufficient sum of money to bear all funeral expenses of my daughter Henretta Richards, so as to give her a proper burial in my family grave lot; and if there shall be any surplus money by said sale last mentioned, or otherwise, said surplus money to be invested upon interest for the use of my said wife......" Conclusions are that Children living with John and Luzetta in 1870 and 1880 were children of Henretta and for some reason Henretta was excluded from will as heir but her burial was provided for by the will. Executors were John's son-in-laws Benjamin High and Franklin Harley. Will was witnessed by W.C. Miller and P.G. Carey. Rachel was not named in the will in any way. She was listed on the 1860 census so I am concluding that she died sometime between 1860 and 1870.
