George KING, b. circa 1788, son of Johannis KING and Maria SCHNEIDER; d. probably the George King who is buried at St. Peter's, Pikeland, and died Nov. 18, 1852 (see below). He and his son Abraham King were the sextons of St. Peter's, Pikeland Cemetery; m. Oct. (Sept. or Oct.?) 10, 1811, Catharine SMITH (Zion's Lutheran Churchbook, Vol. I, Marriages). Catharine SMITH, b. Dec. 3, 1793, dau. of Isaac SMITH; d. Mar. 5, 1861, bur. St. Peter's, Pikeland (dates from her stone).
George & Catharine removed from Charlestown to Pikeland, circa 1826.

VILLAGE RECORD
History AN OLD CHURCH - The cemetery at St. Peter Church, in
West Pikeland, is one of the oldest burying grounds in Chester
county. It was laid out one hundred years ago, by Mr.
Muhlenberg. A log church building was erected at the same
time. In 1812 this was torn down and a stone building took its
place. In 1835 this building was fired by incendiaries, as is
supposed, and burned down. The building now occupying the
ground was erected the same year. Since that time the
congregation has been divided, and another church building has
been erected, by the seceding members, on an adjoining lot.
The present sexton, George King, who has held the post over
thirty four years, has kept a register of interments, with
dates, names, &c. Within that time he has buried just eight
hundred persons. - The ground is covered with many old
fashioned tomb stones, erected anterior to the Revolution,
with quaint inscriptions and epitaphs. Many of them are in
German. A number of men who served in the Revolution are
buried there.

Funeral Attended by Rev. Jesse Knipe -
887 -- George King, Sr., Sexton of Pikeland Church, born Nov. 17, 1787, died Feb. 17 and buried 21, 1864, aged 76 yrs. 2 mo. 29 days. Actual entry reads: "1864 - Mr. George King aged 76 y 2 m 29 days. His disease was palsy. He had served the congregation as Sexton for thirty eight yrs. In that time he had attended eight hundred & eighty funerals and no weather or darkness ever deterred him from the discharge of his duties."
The death date I had for George King in 1852 is clearly wrong. I do not have all of my records with me at the moment to clear this up, but his gravestone is probably difficult to read and my cousin got it wrong when she copied the dates."

VILLAGE RECORD
Death Notice DEATH OF GEORGE KING, Sr. - Ge. King, Sr., of
West Pikeland, died after a short illness - aged 72 years. He
was an estimable citizen and was sexton of St. Peters Church,
West Pikeland, for 38 years, and a consistent member of the
Church for 50 years. During that time he opened the Church for
religious purposes about three thousand times, and dug near
nine hundred graves. He leaves a large circle of relatives and
friends. The funeral on the 21st was attended by a very large
concourse of persons. Jonathan Snyder of West Pikeland met
with an accident on Sunday 21st inst, on his return from the
above funeral. His horse stumbling, fell and threw him on the
ground and falling on him injured him quite severely, he was
taken to his house, but it was not thought he had received any
serious injury.
