Individual Note:   In the subscription schools of West Pikeland Township, John was well educated, and prepared himself for a teacher, and taught for some time. He married Rebecca in 1843. Some four years after his marriage purchased the farm in the southeast part of West Pikeland, on which he has since resided and upon which in 1877 he erected a new residence. John was an active Democrat, and in 1866 was the nominee for his party for the Legislature, receiving the largest vote of any one on his ticket, and the almost unaimous vote of his township. He was also honored with the nomination for county treasurer and auditor, and called upon to fill nearly all the township offices. He served one term in the school board, and was four times elected justice of the peace. In January of 1881 he was elected a director of the Phoenixville National Bank. [From the History of Chester County, PA as published in Appendix E of Oran Emrich's book, Page 127]

From the 1850 Census:

John and Rebecca were living with their son William in West Pikeland Township, Chester County, PA. John's occupation was listed as a farmer. They were living on a farm with a value of $2,700. Also living on the farm with them were Augustus Emery (Rebecca's brother - per Emery Book, Page 15) and Mary Ann Margan aged 17. Augustus' occupation is listed as that of a farmer. They were living next store to a farm owned by John and Mary Ann (King) Fry. William (Aged 6) was shown as having attended school that year.

From the 1860 Census:

John and Rebecca were living with their son William in Chester Springs, West Pikeland Township, Chester County, PA. John's occupation was listed as a farmer. They were living on a farm with value of $4,752 and had personal property worth $1,990. Also living on the farm with them was a maid, Lavina Neils (aged 22), a farm appentice, Benjamin Undlane (last name looks like but is a little illegible) (aged 17), and his sister, Anna M. (aged 13). Lavina had personal property worth $400. William (aged 16) was shown as attending school within the past year. They were living near the farm owned by John and Mary Ann (King) Fry.

From the 1870 Census:

John and Rebecca were living in Chester Springs, West Pikeland Township, Chester County, PA. John's occupation was listed as an Anorganar (spelling looks like this but cannot be sure and am not sure what this is). It appears that he still owned the family farm with a value of $16,000. His son Albert (William A.) was living in the next residence and was listed as a farmer. No value was listed for real estate, so the assumption is that Albert was farming the land owned by John. John had personal property worth $1,500. John and Mary Ann (King) Fry still were living next to John and Rebecca.
